Gazprom is preparing a construction project in the Yamal peninsula. The project implies the construction of a gas-to-chemicals complex: production of polymers on the premises of Bovanenkovo play, informs Vedomosti.

Gazprom is now considering the opportunity to build the plant with the capacity of 3 MTPA based on MTO technology (methanol-to-olefins). This technology allows to produce ethylene and propylene from dry gas via the preliminary release of methanol.

To date, Gazprom has only one gas-to-chemicals project in Yamal – Novourengoy Gas Chemical Complex with the capacity of 400k tonnes of polymers. This complex is under construction since 1993, the completion of the project is regularly shifted.

Bovanenkovo cluster includes three fields – Bovanenkovo, Kharasavey, and Kruzenshtern. Total extraction projected by Gazprom is about 180 billion cm of gas per annum. Along with development of deeper deposits, the company plans to increase gas extraction to about 217-223 billion cm after 2030.

Gazprom has already discussed plans on involving the consortium of foreign companies headed by Russian Direct Investment Fund. Among the potential project participants are Saudi SABIC and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR.
